Food security and the well-being of rural communities are socioeconomic aspects most farmers care about and attend to on a daily basis.

At Wepener on Friday, 17 July, OVK, the Red Meat Producers’ Organisation in the Free State (RPO) and Free State Agriculture (FSA), as well as the local farming association celebrated Mandela Day by contributing to the Feed a Child project.

According to the organisation’s website, Feed a Child supplies more than 2 000 000 meals per annum to children throughout South Africa.

The Feed a Child project in Wepener started in 1988 and now provides nutritious meals to about 500 children in the community three times per week.

“We find tremendous joy in aiding Feed a Child to supply a decent meal to a hungry child,” said OVK chairperson Manie Botha.

“It’s great to see farmers’ and the sector’s caring embodied in such an initiative. I think our farmers give so easily despite challenging seasons and uncertainties, because they know hardship and want to help,” said FSA CEO Henk Vermeulen.

“We all cherish our country’s children, because they are South Africa’s future,” said Roelf Jacobs, chairperson of FSA’s social welfare committee.
