The poultry industry started last year off on the wrong foot with media reports on the industry’s practice of “glazing”, or injecting brine and flavour-enhancers into instantly frozen chicken pieces.

The agriculture department also contributed to the criticism. The SA Poultry Association (SAPA) claimed that brined chicken offers higher value than fresh chicken, especially to lower income consumers.
Local poultry producers also suffered due to higher chicken imports from Brazil, which jumped by 49% in March and April, according to industry players.

SAPA brought an anti-dumping application against Brazil to the trade and industry department. By the middle of July, the department announced that it was formally investigating Brazil for dumping chicken.
