Conditions on Thandi Modise’s farm have improved

A recent inspection of the farm belonging to National Council of Provinces chairperson Thandi Modise has reportedly revealed improved conditions.

In July the NSPCA found numerous starving and thirsty, as well as dead or dying, animals on Modise’s North West farm. It was reported that some of the pigs had resorted to cannibalism and to drinking their own urine.

Animal cruelty charges were immediately filed against Modise and the NSPCA is awaiting a court date. Meanwhile, a statement issued by the NSPCA said that, in contrast to the organisation’s inspections of Modise’s farm prior to 24 October, its inspectors were now being given unlimited access to the property.

“Cattle on the farm have been supplied with sufficient food and appear to be in acceptable condition,” said the statement. “It is confirmed that the farm management sought, obtained and acted upon veterinary guidance as advised by the NSPCA.”

The NSPCA statement added that it would continue to monitor Modise’s farm to ensure continued compliance with animal welfare laws.
