“Richard combines a sound knowledge of proven and modern farming practices with a passion for his personnel and his farm to make him the clear choice in this year’s competition,” said Kerry Roodt, General Manager: Marketing Communications of Toyota SA Motors as she handed him the keys to a brand new Toyota Hilux Xtra Cab.

Morgan farms with Brangus cattle, Döhne Merino sheep and recently added Boer goats. “Richard is highly motivated. He is well versed in breeding best practices and as such he has applied these practices to optimise animal production,” said Prof Carlu van der Westhuizen, the national convenor and main judge of the competition. “Importantly he believes in the upliftment of his personnel and in the sustainable development of his Eastern Cape Farm.”

Richard is married to Kate and is father to a son and a triplet of girls. It is the 8th year that the competition has been held as a partnership between Agri SA and Toyota SA Motors. “One does not often consider the complexities involved in running a successful farm,” says Johannes Möller, President of Agri SA. “Farmers are required to master a range of skills, from business to biology in an ever changing environment in which they do not control all of these variables.”
