SA consumers have been cautioned to use electricity sparingly as Eskom declared its fourth power emergency since November 2013 on Thursday morning.

The electricity supplier has asked its key industrial customers to reduce their power consumption by 10%. It also called on consumers “to urgently switch off geysers, pool pumps and all non-essential appliances” to prevent the need for rotational load shedding.

“The power system is very tight. This risk has increased significantly due to the heavy rains over the past few days and an increase in technical problems experienced at some of Eskom’s power stations,” said Eskom.

Eskom customers can view load shedding schedules on the Eskom website (http://loadshedding.eskom.co.za/) or contact the customer call centre on 0860 037 566 should load shedding become necessary.
