Pieter Swanepoel, who farms in the Fouriesburg district, is in a stable condition after being shot in the head following a robbery in the town on Friday, 20 November 2015. This follows the murder of Jan Barnard, a farmer in the Odendaalsrus district on 19 November.

Swanepoel apparently arrived at the Fouriesburg business while the robbery was taking place. Two men were allegedly holding the shop assistant at gunpoint but turned their attention on Swanepoel. After shooting him, they escaped in his vehicle.

Josef van Eeden, Free State Agriculture’s Fouriesburg safety co-ordinator, said in a statement two suspects were apprehended shortly after the local safety network was activated.

“They rolled the vehicle and fled on foot into the surrounding mountains. Farmers, farm workers and SAPS members worked together to apprehend the alleged robbers,” he said.

The suspects remain in custody and will appear in court shortly.
