Narrow profit margins on maize crops mean that farmers are forced to reduce input costs. One way of doing this is to combine operations when planting.

The high cost of conventional cultivating practices and concerns about soil conservation have together generated a strong demand for stubble cultivators in South Africa. Effective stubble cultivation contributes significantly to sustainable agriculture and long-term yield. With this in mind, Pöttinger’s new Multiline series takes the range of applications offered by the Synkro 3030 stubble cultivator to a new level.

The Multiline is trailed from a drawbar attached to a Cat III lower linkage and can also be used behind smaller Cat II tractors. The machine is raised hydraulically and the unit, carried on the rubber packer roller, provides a ground clearance of 250mm. Pöttinger Vitasem A or Vitasem ADD seed drills are installed as standard above the packer roller, and can be removed easily so that the trailed stubble cultivator can be used on its own.

In the field and during road transport, the machine runs on the rubber packer roller, which is divided into two sections with a central support, ensuring smooth running and optimum stability during transport. Because the roller is divided it does not smear the soil at the headland when turning. Ring spacing on the packer is 125mm. With 24 rows, the seed slots are effectively pre-packed, ensuring excellent germination. The edging plate provides a neat finish between passes.

A final advantage is that Synkro stubble cultivators are easily adjustable and fold up for transport.

The Synkro 3030
Pöttinger Synkro cultivators deliver optimum stubble cultivation and are suitable for shallow and deep soil preparation. The 3030 has 11 tines and a working width of 3m. Row spacing is 270mm, the distance between rows is 750mm, and there are six levelling discs behind the tines.

On the 1030 series, a new trip leg system with horizontal springs enables non-stop stubble cultivation. The machine is also well protected, due to a triggering pressure of 500kg, a high trip clearance of 300mm and additional shear bolt protection with two leg positions to optimise ground penetration.

The Synkro 5030
The Synkro 5030 has 18 tines and a working width of 5m. The arrangement of the share point and wing guarantees shallow cultivation with 100% consistent penetration across the entire work area without the points scoring deep grooves. This lays the correct foundation for tillage and planting, helping to create optimal germination conditions.

The stubble cultivator also mechanically processes wilted crop residue. The crop residue is mixed in, thanks to the close gang spacing and the additional mixing effect of the serrated, maintenance-free concave discs. The latter are guided independently of the working depth so that they always operate at the depth preset by the trailed roller. Farmers can choose the most appropriate trailed roller for their conditions to create a pattern of compacted stripes or loosen the soil surface.
