A user-friendly makeover for a holiday home

I received a call from a previous client to come on site and see what I could suggest to make their holiday home more user-friendly and generally improve the look of the house.

To start with, the client wanted all the steel cottage-pane windows replaced with aluminium framing and full-pane glazing. The present windows onto the new veranda would also be replaced with fold-back aluminium doors. Most importantly, the owner required outside-living facilities added, as this is where they spend most of their leisure hours. The house had two attic bedrooms upstairs, so for more space, the outer walls of the house were raised by 600m.

The veranda roof tucked under the present roof effectively reduced the large empty space between window head height and wall-plate level. Bar-relief plaster reveals around the windows and doors would also help to fill those large spaces around the windows. The client also wanted to re-roof the house to improve the farm-style aesthetics. Look at the before and after and let me know if it still looks plain and unattractive. All the add-ons and alterations are shown in red.
