Woolworths is investigating the issue of selling predator-friendly meat products. This follows the news that the retailer is importing free-range beef from Namibia. Free-range farming incorporates the principles that the animals should be free from pain, injury, fear and stress. Responding to the rumour that mutton will soon be bought at a premium from SA sheep farmers who don’t trap or hunt predators such as leopards, black-backed jackal and caracal, Woolworths said: “The issue of selling predator-friendly meat products is one Woolworths is investigating. Currently, Woolworths is working with a number of experts to develop guidelines for farmers to help them integrate predator management with livestock production.” – Roelof Bezuidenhout
