This year is the 10th anniversary of the National Emergent RED Meat Producers’ Organisation (Nerpo). On 6 and 7 June Nerpo’s countrywide celebrations came to the Ngqushwa region not far from Peddie where the Eastern Cape Emergent Red Meat Producers’ Organisation (ECERPO) in conjunction with the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture and the Amatole District Municipality celebrated this significant milestone.
Eastern Cape agriculture MEC Gugile Nkwinti, the guest speaker at the celebrations, told farmers that the department was dedicated to continued support for communal and emerging farmers including the establishment of new training facilities for communal and emerging farmers in specific areas. Other topics covered included access to land for the expansion of stock numbers, issues concerning land tenure, the responsible use of land and continued logistical and management support from the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture.

Aggrey Mahanjana, group MD of Nerpo, emphasised the importance of cooperation between communal and emerging farmers and local government to ensure the growth of red meat production in rural areas. – Mike Burgess
