These include:

Bredasdorp Ploughing Competition
The second annual Mega ploughing competition will be presented by Tubestone/BKT in partnership with Grain SA and Agri Mega from 18-20 September at Mega Park.

Tubestone/BKT’s Susan du Toit warns that, during last year’s competition, it was realised that a general misconception existed of what a ploughing competition actually entails.

“Most people think you just take a tractor and plough and try to see who finishes first, but the competition requires much more effort from participants aiming to do well,” says du Toit.

She explains that hours of training are required in order to do the necessary adjustment ensuring excellent work. During the adjudication factors taken into account include straight furrows, consistency in depth, quality of the soil that’s turned over and how well the organic material is covered. Participants also have a time limit of three hours to neatly till a 100m x 20m area.

Overberg Farm Worker of the Year
The winner of this competition will be announced at a gala event on the eve of the Agri Mega Week, on Tuesday, 17 September. The competition is sponsored by the Western Cape department of agriculture and Shoprite, with Total SA as a regional sponsor for the Overberg.

Sheep counting
The annual sheep counting competition is a highlight of Agri Mega Week and will take place at Mega Park from 18-21 September. BKB and Voermol are the proud sponsors of this year’s competition.
