Government encourages farming

President Jacob Zuma is encouraging rural communities to get involved with subsistence farming.

Zuma said in a statement that programmes aimed at rural development, such as Masibuyele Emasimini and FetsaTlala are well placed for the rural population and would contribute greatly towards food security in the country.

“Government will continue to invest in the country’s rural areas in order to stimulate local economic growth and to further the social development of people living outside urban areas," said Zuma.

"It is important to strengthen our rural areas and invest in the land, in agriculture and stock farming to enhance food security."

Zuma said traditional leaders must marshal their communities back to the land to plough and produce food through subsistence farming.
