Sakkie farms on Rietfontein Farm and his farming business comprises rainfed maize and sunflower production and commercial cattle and sheep production.

Grain forms 80% of his business. He has been farming for the past three years in partnership with his father, Fanie van Zyl.

“My vision for the future is to farm sustainably and profitably and to create favourable working conditions for the workers on my farm,” said Sakkie, who holds an MSc Agric Agricultural Economics degree from the University of Pretoria.

“The uncertain climatic conditions are the biggest threat to grain and livestock production in North West. I will therefore have to adjust my farming practices accordingly. One of my priorities is to amass as much animal fodder as possible for the coming season,” he said.
