Grain SA, in conjunction with Pioneer Foods and Loubser Transport, launched an outreach action after the region was declared a disaster area following a strike lasting more than five months.

In a media statement released by Grain SA, CEO Jannie de Villiers said: “Few people realise that even though the strike has ended, the supporting economic activities around the mines will take some time to recover.”

The strike, which affected small businesses and countless families, had a ripple effect on the mining town since both employees and contract workers earned little or no income during the stoppage.

“Our contribution, as a basic staple food provider, will ensure that the families affected by the strike will receive some supply and children especially, will not have to go to school hungry,” said de Villiers.
