“We were put off the rails by the elections,” Bongeka Mbeleni, deputy director Africa relations at the department of agriculture, told Farmer’s Weekly.

SA will sign the CAADP compact in March or April next year, she added.

So far 40 other countries have signed the compact and progressed to develop national agriculture and food security investment plans, said Mbeleni.

CAADP’s goal is to eradicate hunger and reduce poverty through agriculture. Africa’s governments have agreed to increase public investment in agriculture by a minimum of 10% of their national budgets and to raise agricultural productivity by at least 6%.
