Samil bought 333 bales, Stucken 401, Mosenthals 54 and New England 20. Owing to the quality on offer, the kid market was softer, according to Deon Saayman of Mohair SA. The young goats and fine adults finished at a higher level, with good prices paid for the finer microns.
A highest price of R491,60/kg was paid for a bale of good style 25-micron kid mohair. Volumes offered through 2014’s auction system remained mainly unchanged, with expectations that production for the year would increase slightly over last year’s figure. The market closed 11% higher from the beginning of the winter season, and the average market indicator for the season closed on R179,38/kg, compared with the R117,60/kg average of the 2013 winter season.
CMW’s Pierre van der Vyver said that general demand for mohair was still good. “There might be price fluctuations in 2015, but nothing major, meaning less than 15%. Good quality will always have a demand, but the big price differences between microns are expected to continue,” he said. CMW’s market indicator for kids’ hair closed at R347/kg, young goat hair at R230,98/kg and adult mohair at R151,91/kg.
From next year, all Mohair has to be delivered in white nylon packs to prevent contamination with foreign fibres. However, green bags will still be accepted for underweight lots. The first sale of the new year is on 17 February 2015.
