Poultry sector performing well in a tough economy

The SA poultry industry is out-performing the rest of the economy with growth of 3,3% per year, according to Dr Azar Jammine, an economist at Econometrix.

Spending on non-durable goods such as food increased in the first quarter of 2015 as consumers had more disposable income due to declining fuel prices, he told the 2015 AVI Africa conference in Johannesburg. This directly benefitted the sector as the demand for poultry products increased.

“Load-shedding in the short term is ironically boosting demand for poultry,” he said. This was because more people bought fast food chicken meals when they were unable to cook at home.

“The economy isn’t heading for a total collapse, but it could be doing so much better,” said Jammine.
