The winner of the third annual Wolftrap Steakhouse Championships was announced yesterday (30 June 2015) in Johannesburg.

Speaking at the event, competition judge and renowned local chef Peter Goffe-Wood, who is also a judge on the television cooking game show MasterChef South Africa, said the championships raised the bar for steakhouses across South Africa.

“Of course it is about good quality steak, but we judge the entire restaurant experience, from service and knowledge of wine pairings to the chips and sauces that accompany the meat,” Goffe-Wood said.

The judges even checked if the waiter’s aprons were clean, he said.

Steakhouses were also judged on their ability to inform patrons about the origin of the meat served by the restaurant.

Owner and patron of the winning steakhouse, Martin Lombaard has been in the restaurant business since the early 1990s and launched Little Havana in 2012.
