Farm attacks not only aimed at white farmers – FSA

Farm violence and murders were not aimed at white farmers only, according to Dr Jane Buys, Free State Agriculture (FSA) safety analyst. FSA and AfriForum surveys showed that farm workers are increasingly being targeted by criminals.

She said this tendency was evident in all provinces.

Buys’ comments followed the murder of farm manager Robert Rhadebe (67) on the farm Silo in the Harrismith district on 28 August. The attackers absconded with the deceased bakkie and R300 in cash.

“My greatest desire is that lawlessness will come to an end. It has a terrible impact on people,” said farm owner Danie Badenhorst.

“The attacks on and murders of workers and farm managers mean that we have to focus on the safety of workers more and more,” said FSA CEO Henk Vermeulen.

FSA called on its members to accommodate workers in their contingency plans with regard to training and simulation exercises in order to promote their safety.
