A Zambian sable antelope bull was recently sold for a record price of R27 million, more than double the previous record, and another for R21 million at the same auction in Gravelotte in Limpopo.
Earlier this month (September) a buyer paid R9,4 million for a kudu bull – almost four times the previous record price of R2,4 million.
“Just like the cattle stud industry there are specific animals of good characteristics which are rare and are used to improve genetics," Oberem told Farmer’s Weekly.
When asked what factors contributed to buyers being willing to part with millions to purchase a single bull, Oberem said hat the reputation of the breeders played a big role.
Oberem said he was certain that eventually the market would differentiate between top class genetics for breeding and the "bottom line game used for trophy hunting".
The R27 million, four and a half year-old sable antelope bull, named Mopanie, had horns measuring 1,2 metres, according to media reports.
