Malawi youth encouraged to become better farmers

The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid-Tropics (ICRISAT) has targeted Malawi as one of the sub-Sahara countries where agriculture can play a significant role in poverty alleviation, according to an ICRISAT statement.

Agriculture employed 80% of the people, but the sector was crippled by erratic rainy seasons, droughts and poor soils. Poor rural infrastructure coupled with limited access to credit and markets also added to the problem, according to the statement.

ICRISAT has decided to support and motivate Malawi’s youth to become self-reliant farmers by harnessing markets while managing risks through an ICRISAT strategy called Inclusive Market-Oriented Development (lMOD). This included the provision to modern tools, quality seeds, training and capital.
