Free State Agriculture (FSA) said in a statement that it was shocked by the attack in which the farmer was assaulted by two men outside her house as she arrived home from a meeting.

The FSA said in the statement that according to information the organisation received, the farmer’s hands were tied behind her back with a piece of clothing and she was stabbed in the shoulder as well as under her knees with a knife. Her injuries reportedly also included being burnt with an iron.

“The suspects apparently wanted cash. Only a small amount of money as well as cell phones were stolen. After the suspects fled the scene, she was able to free herself and called on her neighbours for help,” FSA said.

According to the statement senior police officials were on the scene, and the search was still on for suspects.

“The brutality of the attack and the fact that a defenceless woman was attacked so brutally, is very concerning and we condemn this in the strongest possible terms! This farmer supports her community in different ways, and she tries her best to uplift the indigent. She fulfilled an important role in fighting the large wild fires in Harrismith last year, while she supported the poverty stricken communities who lost everything in the fires, by requesting donations for them afterwards,” FSA said.
