Confusion over amendments to poultry meat regulations

A fox has been let loose in the hen house of poultry meat regulations after the agriculture department released an incorrect statement saying that the regulations that would, among others, stipulate new maximum brine injection levels for poultry products, had been gazetted.

DAFF released the statement earlier this month indicating that agriculture minister Senzeni Zokwana had approved the amendments to poultry meat regulations governing the controversial issue of brining of poultry meat.

However, Kevin Lovell, CEO of the South African Poultry Association (SAPA), told Farmer’s Weekly that the regulations had yet to be promulgated. “The press release was issued in error,” said Lovell.

He said that SAPA had submitted its comments on the proposed amendments, but was still awaiting feedback from DAFF on concerns raised by the industry association over the proposed amendments.
