The 2015 Paris Climate Conference, also known as COP21, is underway in Le Bourget until 11 December.

One of the most critical outcomes of the event is that participating countries develop a new international agreement on how to keep global warming at 2°C.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, global warming of more than 2°C would have significant implications such as an increase in the number of extreme weather events.

The outcome of the event is important for sectors such as agriculture. Global food production and security are already under strain as a result of extreme climate variability. Climate change will also impact on how the agriculture sector produces 50% more food to feed a projected nine billion people by 2050.

The conference is expected to attract about 50 000 participants including 25 000 official delegates from government, intergovernmental organisations, UN agencies and NGOs.
