The SAT 3 strain of the FMD virus was discovered in cattle in the Matiane community in the Thulamela local municipality of the Vhembe District.
According to a DAFF statement, the outbreak occurred within South Africa’s FMD protection zone, meaning it will have no effect on South Africa’s FMD-free zone status. It should also not have any impact on South Africa’s export activities.
The affected area is close to the greater Kruger National Park complex. FMD-infected buffaloes are prevalent in this area and are considered a constant source of infection.
DAFF has appealed to all farmers to refrain from moving cattle out of the affected area.
