The minister of the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) Gugile Nkwinti handed over title deeds to eight successful land claimant communities from the North West, Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga.

This took place at the People and Parks National Conference in Midrand.

The land claims included the Bapolomiti, Jonathan and Klipvoor areas in the North West, the Double Drift and Dwesa Cwebe areas in Eastern Cape, as well as the Moutse and Mahlabane Trust in Mpumalanga, according to a DRDLR statement.

Nkwinti said because the claimants were now landowners, they consequently had a greater responsibility to ensure cooperation among members of the community structures.

“When you receive title deeds, you enter into a strategic partnership with government. Let us use the land. We cannot have a nation that is poor while we own the land; we must use it productively,” he said.

Traditional leaders needed to assist the respective communities to ensure that the land was fully utilised and productive, according to Nkwinti.
