SA farmers to prepare for export opportunities – Senekal

The African market is on our doorstep and is the logical place for South Africa’s agricultural exports, well-known KZN sugar farmer Charl Senekal told the recent AgriSA Commodity Conference in Somerset West.

With Africa expected to be home to 1,7 billion people by 2050, farmers in SA needed to prepare for export opportunities. Unless farmers produced 70% more food by then widespread political unrest was predicted.

Also, high food prices affect the development of children. “In SA, one in five people will go to bed hungry; in Angola one in 3,5 people will go to bed hungry – we can’t afford to let this happen on our continent,” said Senekal.

Government must put policies in place that encouraged food production and create friendly trade and business environments, he said. “The SADC borders should fall.”
