Veld fire warning for the Free State

The Free State Umbrella Fire Association has issued a general veld fire warning for the whole province.

The association’s CEO, Thinus Steenkamp, said strong winds coupled with high temperatures are expected on Thursday 19 September and Friday 20 September, which creates the ideal conditions for veld fires under the current dry conditions.

He cautioned landowners to remain on their land as far as possible and to ensure that fire fighting equipment is in good working order and that fire fighting teams remain on standby.

Steenkamp also said landowners must be on the lookout for fires and report any fires as a matter of urgency to the respective fire protection structures in the province.
