Zokwana’s cattle herder gets increase

Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Senzeni Zokwana has announced he has increased his cattle herder’s salary to R2 400/month.

According to SAnews.gov.za, the minister made the announcement at a gala dinner in Cape Town on Friday, 20 June.

It came after it was reported that Zokwana paid his cattle herder, Vuyolwethu Ndabambi, R800/month, the equivalent of R26,30/day.

“I make a call to all of you to honour those who work for you and pay them a better salary so that they can [give] a better service," said Zokwana.

All farm workers are covered by sectoral determinations, which stipulate the minimum wages that must be paid to workers defined as vulnerable.

On 1 March 2014, the monthly minimum wage for farm workers increased from R2 274,82 to R2 420,41. The weekly minimum wage increased from R525 to R558,60 and the daily wage increased from R105 to R111,72 for a nine-hour workday. The hourly wage increased from R11,66 to R12,41.
