Agritechnica honours New Holland’s innovations

Joe Spencer reports from Agritechnica, the world’s largest exhibition of agricultural machinery and equipment held in Hanover, Germany. This year, New Holland proved its mettle with five silver medals in the three key business segments: tractors, harvesting equipment and speciality machines, where the judges recognised the productivity and sustainability of its innovative solutions. Here are some of the winners.

Intelligent Trailer Braking System: Best in class for road safety and stability
For safer braking, the Intelligent Trailer Braking System automatically controls the valve which regulates the braking force exerted on the trailer in relation to the tractor’s deceleration. This equalises the braking effect between tractor and trailer. An electronic control system modulates the trailer brakes for uniform tractor and trailer braking, eliminating the “pushing” effect which can cause dangerous jack-knifing.
When using the transmission or the engine brake to decelerate, the system senses the reduction and modulates trailer braking to ensure that the trailer slows down as quickly and safely as possible. This means that the stopping distance of the tractor and trailer combination is virtually the same as that of the tractor alone when decelerating.

The Smart Key improves operator and fleet management
The Smart Key is an effective measure against machinery theft and can enhance the productivity of both the operator and fleet management. Each operator gets a Smart Key equipped with a fully programmable radio frequency identification chip. This lets fleet owners monitor their working methods and fleet usage. Smart Keys can be programmed to work with selected machines in a fleet (up to 40 machines per key) or as a “master key” compatible with all machines. Specific machine parameters can be linked to each key, for example limiting the top road speed on machines driven by “rookie” drivers.
Operators can recall their preferred machine settings via the IntelliView monitor, which automatically recognises the key owner on start-up. The system can also record an operator’s average fuel use, hectares worked and possible misuse, and transmit them to the management software. This lets farm managers assign tasks to the most efficient operators, and provides an electronic record of hours worked for simplified accounting.

SynchroKnife drive increases harvesting uniformity
The centrally mounted SynchroKnife drive has revolutionised the way headers are powered, ensuring an even weight distribution across the entire header for more uniform stubble height. These perfectly balanced headers ensure that advanced height control mechanisms, such as Auto Float II, work more effectively. The slim SynchroKnife is neatly situated under the header floor, to maintain smooth crop flow into the header for better feeding, reduce non-functional width, and decrease crop snagging by eliminating bulky side-mounted gearboxes. Dual opposing hydraulically driven knife drives substantially reduce the stress on the knife bar, improving reliability and reducing the likelihood of downtime during the harvest season. This system also improves in-cab comfort by reducing the vibrations reaching the operator. These heads fit the New Holland CR and CX8000 range of combine harvesters.

ECOBraud for sustainable viticulture
ECOBraud, New Holland’s Sustainable Viticulture programme, is an integral element of New Holland’s Clean Energy Leader strategy. The goal is to raise viticulture’s productivity and profitability while reducing its environmental impact.

ECOBraud encompasses the complete range of New Holland viticulture equipment, including Braud grape harvesters and speciality tractors. The new range of Braud 9000 multi-function harvesters sets a new benchmark for productivity and harvesting safety.

The Intelligent Management System (IMS), which controls principal machine functions in relation to load, can reduce fuel consumption by up to 31%. If an on-board diagnosis of possible malfunctions finds a problem, it will alert the operator, as well as automatically stop the machine or disengage the self-levelling system to prevent accidents. Many functions, including forward speed, levelling and hopper emptying, can only be performed when the operator is present.

A real-time stability indicator uses a network of sensors that transfer data in real time to the on-board computer. Data includes the exact weight on each wheel, lateral slope, ground conditions, hopper fill level and distribution and the use of multifunction equipment.

The operator is alerted via the intuitive IntelliView III monitor when the vehicle approaches its stability threshold. This is available in multifunction mode and when harvesting on difficult terrain. The machine’s height and lateral position are automatically adjusted, with no operator input, to prevent possible accidents and increase overall safety, even on difficult and undulating terrain and during high-speed road transport.

The Braud 9090X Olive Harvester improves harvesting efficiency
Olive oil production is growing steadily worldwide. To increase productivity and limit cost increases, growers are turning to super-intensive orchards that require highly mechanised harvesting. New Holland has teamed up with growers to develop the pioneering new Braud 9090X Olive Harvester, which can increase harvesting efficiency by up to 20% and more than double harvesting speed.

It features a shaker frame with dedicated front, middle and rear rollers that ‘package’ the tree before and after shaking for optimal harvesting efficiency. The harvesting head works in three dimensions, guiding and clamping the foliage to ensure a smooth flow into the patented, dual-articulated Noria baskets, which convey the olives into the hoppers.

New Holland’s renowned double harvesting shaker system overcomes the resistance forces when harvesting olives from trees, which are 10 times higher than those of conventional vines. It can harvest over 95% of olives at a constant forward speed of roughly 2km/hour, picking olives at optimum ripeness.
