Vitamech, based at Bellville in the Western Cape, is a regular Nampo exhibitor. This year the company displayed some impressive equipment aimed, according to product manager Marius Tolmay, at specific niche sectors of the ¬agricultural machinery market. Joe Spencer reports that Vitamech appreciates that Nampo has developed into the premier showcase for all types of machinery, not just those used by maize farmers.

Grass seed is a very expensive commodity, so it is essential to place it in the top 10mm to 15mm of a properly prepared seedbed. The ¬Brillion SSP-12 Sure Stand seeder places the seed so precisely that, due to the excellent germination, sowing rates can be cut by almost half. Front rollers crush lumps, press down small stones and form a firm seedbed. ¬Precision metering devices, consisting of 24 fluted feed rolls drop the seed onto the prepared ground, and the rear rollers split the shallow ridges formed by the front rollers and gently firm the soil around the tiny seeds. All are planted at fingernail depth to ensure rapid germination and fast ¬emergence. The SSP-12 is a fully mounted unit planting 3,66m wide.
