Swiss fresh produce technology specialist ECCS has launched a new range of portable data loggers that enables producers, packers and freight companies to remotely monitor the temperature of fresh produce and perishable goods on their tablets before, during and after transportation.

The I-PLUG+ single use temperature data logger is a USB-compatible monitoring device the size of a memory stick. Fully recyclable, it records temperatures of between -40°C and +70°C within 90 seconds and can store up to 5 000 samples. Multi-level LED indicators give producers, packers and shippers an instant indication of temperature, while a USB interface allows it to be connected directly to any Android tablet to review full temperature data and history.

The I-PLUG was demonstrated earlier this year at the Fruit Logistica 2014 trade exhibition in Berlin to showcase the new I-NET logger, an easy-to-install device that transmits temperature and humidity data to a web-based platform. The data loggers and monitors form part of a wide range of products launched by ECCS in 2013 to help the fresh produce supply chain efficiently monitor perishable products during transportation storage.

The I-PLUG+ single use temperature data logger, available worldwide, can be used in conjunction with free-to-download software directly from the ECCS website (www.escortcoldchain.com) and is compatible with any PC or Android tablet. The company has no representative or distributor in South Africa at present, but is looking for a local partner. In the meantime, the data logger can be imported directly at about US$20 (currently just over R200) each, but the minimum order is 50 units.
