The saw that cuts like silk

Silky Saws has a wide range of saws for every job, and their unique design is still leader of the pack, writes Chris Nel.

With a history going back more than nine decades, Japan’s legendary Silky company is the undisputed leader in hand saws, with countless technological breakthroughs to its credit. Silky Saws are available as fixed-blade and folding models for every imaginable application. Every fixed-blade Silky Saw comes with a custom scabbard.

On folding models, the blade is protected when folded, and may come in a convenient carrying case.Great care goes into the handle design. A rubber elastomer compound, either inserted or vulcanised to ABS plastic or steel, makes it comfortable to hold, reduces vibration and offers a superior grip for wet, cold or gloved hands. This hi-tech compound doesn’t get slippery, even when wet, reduces fatigue and makes the saw safer.

All Silky Saw blades combine a harder, longer-lasting cutting edge with exceptional tensile strength in the rest of the blade, for the ideal combination of hardness and flexibility.Blades are laser-cut from a unique steel alloy engineered and produced exclusively for Silky Saws. Using a special high-frequency heating technique, teeth are impulse hardened for exceptional performance – they’re harder than a normal file and stay sharp about three times longer.

Meanwhile, the rest of the blade retains its flexibility. Silky offers different types of teeth for the best performance. Distinctive icons indicate the type and/or the manufacturing technology used. Non-set teeth blades are made from SK-4 high carbon steel and taper ground (thicker at the tooth edge, thinner at the back of the blade) for less resistance and smoother, easier, faster cutting.

Mirai-Me Smooth Cutting is the technology of the future. Blades have precision-ground, razor-sharp teeth with four cutting angles along their length. They leave a very smooth surface and are ideal for pruning, lowering the risk of infection. They can rip-cut, cross-cut and slant-cut.In rough cutting hand saws for heavier tasks, the teeth appear to be set in four rows. They can rip-cut,cross-cut and slant-cut.

Some Silky Saw blades aren’t impulse-hardened, and can be sharpened with a file. Hard Chrome Plated blades have a hard, durable surface resistant to rust and the effects of resin. They’re finely or mirror polished and wipe clean easily. The Silky Saw is manufactured in a ISO 9001 certified process, to exceed international quality standards.
