Indigenous South African cattle breeds have developed to be able to withstand the harsh environmental conditions associated with Africa. The Nguni, for example, can maintain a high level of blood urea when the nitrogen content of pasture drops. As a result, it does not require additional urea to maintain its condition in winter.
