Indijon firefighting trailer – quick to deal with veld fires

Self-contained, rapid response, firefighting unit – these terms are used to describe the new Indijon fire-fighting trailer. SABS-approved, this unit is
giving larger firefighting tenders a run for their money. Chris Nel reports.

WINTER VELD FIRES ARE AN
ever-present danger over vast areas of South Africa. This, combined with personal experience of the destruction they can cause and the requirements of the National Veld and Forest Fire Act, prompted David Coonan to develop the Indijon trailer – a self-contained, high-mobility, rapid response, trailed firefighting unit that is towed onto a fire site by a bakkie or a tractor and operated by one person. No special training is required.
As the towing vehicle can be used for other purposes, no special towing vehicle, restricted to a single use, is needed. For example, on a game ranch it can be towed by a game-viewing vehicle.
The Indijon is a cost-effective option for small-scale farmers and at golf courses or equestrian estates where fire is an occasional threat that does’t justify the expense of a dedicated fire tender.
The equipment is mounted on an unbraked, light trailer frame with heavy-duty solid axles and 14-inch wheels that specifically cater for loads off highway.
The centrifugal water pump, powered by a premium 171cm³ petrol motor, is specifically designed for fire fighting applications and pumps 400 litres per minute to a 75m head. Water is housed in a certified rotomoulded 500-litre polyethylene tank. The 30m hose reel and nozzle, adjustable from fan spray to jet, is standard fire equipment to SABS standards.
Using the fan spray, the tank empties in 30 minutes, and in less than two minutes the unit can refill itself from a dam or river. It quickly deals with smaller fires, and with its optional boom sprayer it is indispensable in burning firebreaks at residential developments where access to horse paddocks for a larger fire tender is not feasible.
The Indijon has already proved its worth when a unit and the fire department arrived at a fire scene at the same time. The unit gained access to the property and began fighting the fire whilst the larger fire tender was trying to gain access.
Several models are available with prices starting from R12 500, excluding VAT.
