Pelham bit

Pelham bit

A Pelham bit with a metal curb chain on an English bridle. The mouthpiece is a single-jointed snaffle, which places pressure on the tongue and bars of the mouth. The bridle attaches to the rings above the mouthpiece, placing pressure on the poll. A bit connector has been used in this instance, but one set of reins usually attaches to the bit, while the other attaches to the bottom ring of the shanks. The pressure on the nose and poll encourages the horse to bend down from the poll.
