One of the main concerns raised was the threat of tar spot (Phyllachora maydis), a serious foliar disease of maize that’s currently wreaking havoc in the US.
The warning came from guest speaker Kevin Kalb, a prominent maize farmer from Dubois, Indiana, in the US.
“While tar spot has not yet been detected in South Africa, farmers should be vigilant. The disease is causing widespread damage to maize crops across the US, and awareness is key,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, Dr Rikus Kloppers, a crop disease specialist at Robigalia CropCare, echoed Kalb’s concern: “Although tar spot does not currently pose an immediate threat locally, we must remain prepared. It’s not a seed-borne disease, but it could easily enter South Africa via contaminated implements or other means. That’s why it’s essential to support the research and development work being done by companies like BASF to protect our agriculture sector.”
At the event, BASF unveiled its latest innovation: Revytek®, a fungicide described as a game-changer in maize disease control.
“Modern agriculture is about more than just maximising yield; it’s about making every hectare count,” said Jaco van Zyl, crop manager of row crops at BASF Agricultural Solutions South Africa.
“With Revytek, we’re equipping farmers with a breakthrough solution that delivers high performance, flexibility, and an excellent return on investment,” he added.
