Confirming the incident, Henk Groenewald, general manager of Karan Beef, told Farmer’s Weekly, “One of our trucks, en route from our Albert Falls feedlot to our abattoir in Balfour, collided with a stationary truck parked on the yellow line of the highway.
“Despite the challenging circumstances, our driver acted swiftly to limit the impact as much as possible,” he explained.
He added that the driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance for observation.
According to Groenewald, the truck was carrying 50 head of cattle at the time as part of a routine delivery and said the remaining 43 animals were safely returned to the feedlot.
“Fortunately, the remaining cattle were not seriously injured. They were inspected by our on-site veterinary team and placed for further monitoring and care,” Groenewald said.
He noted that while five carcasses were securely loaded and returned to the feedlot for proper handling in accordance with health and safety protocols, the local community had taken the other two before Karan Beef’s recovery team arrived at the scene.
