Nico Vermaak, secretary at Grain SA, is in charge of the livestock component at Nampo, and according to him, virtually all the livestock breed societies in the country are taking part in the event in 2025.

The objective of livestock exhibitions is to afford breeders the opportunity to introduce their respective breeds to farmers.

Speaking to Farmer’s Weekly, Vermaak said grain played a vital role in the meat production value chain.

“By far, most of South African grain producers also run a livestock component on their farms, which makes for an interdependency between the sectors. It is therefore vital to offer our visitors a as wide as possible array of information in Grain SA’s quest for sustainability and profitability.”

In terms of biosecurity at Nampo Park, Vermaak said Grain SA followed strict biosecurity protocols.

“All the animals on display are inspected by a private veterinarian every morning before the gates are opened. We are also visited by state veterinarians on a regular basis for inspections. Biosecurity and the welfare of the animals is extremely high on our list of priorities,” he said.

The animals at Nampo were selected by the specific breeders’ societies.

Gawie Naude, a Braunvieh stud breeder, was bringing his top-performing animals to Nampo from Rhodes in the Eastern Cape.

“Nampo is one of the top events for the livestock industry in the country. Only the best of the best is elected by the breeders’ societies to partake in the event. This is an event that can’t be missed by the livestock breeders,” he told Farmer’s Weekly.
