Precision planting winners

Gert Coetzee from Wesselsbron (western production areas) and Gerhard van der Merwe from Newcastle (eastern production areas) were the winners of the precision planting competition, hosted by Monsanto in collaboration with Cerealis Precision.

The winners were announced at a ceremony in Sandton on Thursday. Each walked away with a complete planter conversion valued at R280 000. The 16 runners-up received planting equipment worth R60 000.

For every 50 bags of Deklab seed farmers bought during the previous planting season, they received one entry for the competition. These were put together and 25 finalists from the eastern production areas, 25 from the western production areas and 10 from the Northern Cape irrigation area were randomly selected.

The 16 runners-up were:

  • Derek Allem; Neil Barnard; Basie Grobbelaar; Derek Grobbelaar; Muller van der Merwe; Nico van Wyk; Hannes Wilken; and Frikkie Kirsten. (Western area.)
  • Pep Bierman; Christo Cronjé; Carel Kriek; Dirk Riekert; Simon Riekert; Hendrik Smith; and Miela Steyn. (Eastern.)
  • Herman Dippenaar. (Northern Cape.)
