Western Cape to honour top farm worker

The Western Cape’s top achieving farm worker is set to be named at an upcoming gala function where the winner will also walk away with a cash prize and an overseas trip.

The 2015 Farm Worker of the Year competition gala event, co-sponsored by the Western Cape department of agriculture and Shoprite, will be held at Nederburg Wine Estate in Paarl on 7 November. The provincial winner will be chosen from among the eight regional winners from the Langeberg, Swartland, Elgin and Grabouw, Central Karoo, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, Piket-Bo-Berg, and Berg River regions.

Cornel Paulse (52) is a regional winner for the Franschhoek region. He is a junior manager at Glenwood Vineyards.

“I’m hoping for the best at the national awards ceremony,” he told Farmer’s Weekly, adding he would invest the cash prize in a co-operative should he win.

This year the competition drew 1 247 entries from across the Western Cape, a 20% increase from last year.
