Speaking at the Nation in Conversation dialogue at Nampo, he said farmers needed to manage transformation themselves and were actually in the best position to do so, given the fact that they were very well-adapted to the agricultural environment and their farming operations had remained viable even following the removal of agricultural subsidies in the 1980s.

Prof Nick Vink, chairman of the Department of Agriculture Economy at the University of Stellenbosch said during the discussion that there was no such thing as a workable blanket recipe for transformation and land reform in South Africa.

The fundamental underlying issue was the fact that South Africa consisted of a very diverse group of farmers across a wide spectrum of backgrounds and educational levels, he said.
