Joining the ranks of the RSCA’s existing beef and lamb carcass price records was the R95 paid per kilogram for the Champion Pork Carcass. This carcass, a PIC/Topig produced by Craig McCord of Glenelly Farm in Ashburton, scored 92,5%, and had a cold mass of 72,2kg.
The Oyster Box, a 5-star boutique hotel in Umhlanga, outbid competition and paid a total of R6 859 for the carcass.
Terry Strachan, CEO of the Royal Agricultural Society of Natal that hosts the annual Royal Show, said that the national average pork price on the day was R23,80/kg.
The Champion Beef Carcass, a Bonsmara that achieved a score of 97.03% with a cold mass of 259kg, was also sold to The Oyster Box at R95/kg. The carcass, produced by JJ Ferreira of Ferrero Bonsmaras near Harrismith in the Free State, cost a total of R24 605.
The national average beef price on the day was 37,50/kg. At the 2015 RSCA, the SA record price for a beef carcass was R150/kg, which was also sold to The Oyster Box.
The Champion Lamb Carcass was a white Dorper produced by Coetzee Reitz of Williston in the Northern Cape. With a cold mass of 19,6kg, it scored a near-perfect 99,24%.
The carcass was sold to The Oyster Box for R1 600/kg, with a total price of R31 360. This price was only the second highest ever achieved for a lamb carcass in SA.
