Ban on rhino horn trade lifted

SA judge Francis Legodi has lifted the domestic ban on trade in rhino horns imposed by government in 2009 to reduce poaching

According to media reports, the moratorium was set aside after SA game breeders John Hume and Johan Kruger initiated a legal battle to overturn the ban.

The decision comes ahead of a Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) meeting in Johannesburg next year, where SA planned to submit a proposal to legalise international trade in rhino horn.

Rhino poaching in SA led to 1 215 rhino being killed last year for their horns. Some private rhino breeders believe selling legally harvested horns could supress black market trade.
