Disaster relief in the lower Orange region

Payment of disaster aid to farmers affected by the 2010/11 floods in the Lower Orange River region has commenced.

The payments are earmarked to compensate farmers who repaired and rebuilt weirs and protection walls destroyed by the floods on their properties. Urgent outstanding construction work on infrastructure is also in the planning. This is according to Agri SA’s disaster management advisor Kosie van Zyl. He said some R900 million has been allocated specifically for this purpose by Treasury to the Northern Cape agriculture department.
