Entrepreneur awards recognises women in agriculture

Women farmers were recognised for their role and contribution to Africa’s Agriculture and Food Security at the 14th annual DAFF Female Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in Mahikeng recently.

Minister of agriculture Senzeni Zokwana congratulated the winners, noting that one of the awards’ main objectives is to open export market opportunities for female farmers.

“It is about time we highlight the contribution made by women in the sector that is often regarded as the terrain of men” said Zokwana in a statement.

The winners are:

  • The 2014/15 overall winner: Nokwanele Mzamo, Eastern Cape.
  • Minister’s special award acknowledging, the contribution of young women, and women living with disabilities, as entrepreneurs: Linah Mahlangu, Mpumalanga.
  • Minister’s special award for upcoming youth: Leah Skosana, Mpumalanga.
  • Best Female Worker: Hawukile Makhanya, KwaZulu Natal.
  • Best Subsistence Producer: Thandeka Moseki, North West.
  • Top Entrepreneur (smallholder): Sandra Kroutz, Gauteng.
  • Top Entrepreneur (processing): Ilse Ruthford, Western Cape.
  • Top Entrepreneur (commercial): Mponeng Lentoro, Free State.
  • Top Entrepreneur (export markets): Nokwanele Mzamo, Eastern Cape.
