Farmers in Gauteng have been hard hit by floods over the past few days as a result of the heavy rains.

According to Agri Gauteng executive manager Dirk Hanekom, some farmers had lost machinery and irrigation pumps. Furthermore a number of roads in Centurion, south of Pretoria, were closed due to flooding.

Hanekom said the full extent of the damage could not be fully assessed until the water receded, which could be within the next two days.

John Moffat, a cattle breeder and maize farmer in Midvaal, said his maize was under water. “Farmers in the region reported rainfall of between 50mm and 70mm over the past two days (3 and 4 February),” said Moffat.
