Fuel prices could reach R16/l

A litre of petrol could cost motorists R16 if the rand continues to decline, reported the Automobile Association (AA).

“The severity of the rand’s decline is reflected in the exchange rate numbers. On 27 December, a dollar cost R10,35. By 27 January it cost R11,20.”

On Wednesday (4 February), motorists will be expected to fork out an extra 39c/l (petrol) and 24c/l (diesel) as the fuel price increases.

A further hike is expected at the end of the month.

5 Fuel efficiency tips from the AA:

  • Check your tyre pressure. Under-inflated tyres are not only dangerous, they increase the rolling resistance between the vehicle’s tyres and the road.
  • Service your car regularly.
  • Reduce your drag. Avoid opening windows and sunroofs as these will increase air drag over the car.
  • Lighten your load. Do not carry unnecessary weight in the boot or cabin of your vehicle.
  • Turn off your air-con.
