KZN Agriculture MEC Super Zuma said effective control measures had been implemented to stop the spread of the disease.

In the wake of the outbreak, Zuma has tasked the newly launched Provincial Livestock Association Committee to work with the department to ensure that all farmers belonging to livestock associations in all districts, as well as non-members, were vaccinating their livestock to successfully reduce the impact of FMD.

The department has intensified vaccination programmes and implemented ongoing clinical and serological surveillance in the affected areas since the first case was reported.

Zuma said vaccination was the only option to prevent economic repercussions.

“Our farmers are unable to make a profit due to imposed restrictions but we will continue to work tirelessly to prevent a further spread,” he said.

More than 8 000 cattle in Vryheid were vaccinated between April 23 and May 15 by veterinary services, while 82% of vaccinations have been completed in Ulundi.
