Worcester Show 2007
This year’s Worcester Show was held from 24 to 27 January at the Worcester Showgrounds, or Klein Plasie as it’s affectionately known. The event showcases a variety of farm animals, implements and live entertainment. This year’s show was popular with thousands of visitors descending on the show.

Victoria West Show 2007
This year’s Victoria West Show took place on 9 and 10 February at the town’s show grounds. Because of competition from the Parys Show, the number of entries in the Saddle Horse competition decreased from its usual 300 to only about 200.

George Show 2007
The George Show on 2 March featured 11 Jersey ­breeders who showed 65 animals in the ­Outeniqua Championships, judged by Poena van Niekerk. The 20 Holsteins were judged by Herman Duvenhage.

Vryburg Show 2007
The National Limousin Championships were held in Vryburg on 26 April. Some 139 ­cattle were shown by 12 breeders, and the cow Essie Vobess, which was bred by Coen Steenkamp of ­Bothaville, received the award of the National Senior Champion Limousin Cow. The judges were Koos Lourens and Warie Cilliers.

Ghanzi Show 2006

Taking place at the end of winter in one of the finest beef cattle regions in Southern Africa, the Ghanzi Agricultural Show is the premier event, especially for livestock, in Botswana. Although the Ghanzi District Council is responsible for the show, the Ghanzi Farmers Association organises and presents the livestock section – a show by farmers for farmers.

Lichtenburg Show 2007

Bloemfontein Show 2007
This year marked the 124th Bloemfontein Show, held from 26 April to 5 May amid sunny conditions.
Attendance figures were up 20% from last year. This week we feature the Free State Hereford Champions.

Some 60 cattle were shown by seven breeders at the National Dairy Swiss Championships at this
year’s Bloemfontein Show. After a few years of absence the Holsteins were back in Bloemfontein,
and judge David Fechner of Adelaide, South Australia, said the cattle were “world class”.

Jack Russell Nationals 2007
The Jack Russell National Championships were held at Maselspoort near Bloemfontein on 5 and 6 May. Some 25 exhibitors showed 160 dogs, which are judged in height classes.

Jersey Nationals 2007
The Jersey Nationals were held in April on the Bloemfontein Show Grounds. Some 277 cattle were shown by 36 breeders. Dr Jooste and Canadian Gary Bowers were the judges of the cows, Pierre Human judged the Jersey Jug and the heifers were judged by Coen Steenkamp and Danie Giliomee.

Jamestown Show 2007
The Jamestown Merino Veld Sheep Show took place on 22 June despite the fairly severe drought. Exhibitors from all the surrounding districts attended the show and 16 Merino stud and flock breeders entered 194 sheep into the various classes.

The Standerton Show, which celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, took place on 2 August at the town’s show grounds. This week we feature the Highveld Brahman and Braunvieh champions.

Pretoria Show 2007
The Santa Gertrudis Breeders Society presented its 2007 National Championships at the recent Pretoria Show. Some 20 breeders from around SA participated, entering 225 cattle in 21 individual classes and four group classes. Martin Seyfferdt, Dr Tok Serfontein and Luis Fernando from Brazil were the judges. Franco Kock was the ring steward.

Pretoria Show 2007
The Grey and Red Brahman Championships took place concurrently at the
2007 Pretoria Show. A total of 42 breeders (Grey as well as Red) exhibited 443
Brahman cattle in six group classes, 53 individual classes and four performance classes.
The Red Brahman judges were Theo Dicke and Miles Dicke, while the Grey Brahman judges were Schalk Erlank and Jan Bosman. The ring stewards were Rowland Munger (Red Brahman) and Pine Petzer (Grey Brahman), assisted by students Neil van Niekerk and Wilma van Zyl.

Pretoria Show 2007
The Simbra Championships at the Pretoria Show attracted 36 entries from four breeders, competing in five group classes, 21 individual show classes and one performance class. The Simmentaler Championships drew 198 entries from 23 breeders, competing in four group classes and 24 individual show classes and one performance class.

Ile de France Nationals
Some 213 sheep were exhibited by 15 breeders at the Ile de France National Championships that were held during the Pretoria Show in August. The judges were Wimpy Rossouw of Ottosdal, Bill Elliot of Middelburg in the Eastern Cape and Gideon Doman from Malmesbury.

Windhoek Show 2007
This year’s International Simbra Show was recently held in Windhoek. Some 19 breeders, seven of which were South Africans, showed 175 cattle. The judges were Martin Seyfferdt and Dr Johan Klyts of South Africa. One of the highlights of the show was when the Simbra cow Rumba Dorka of Hardus Breedt won the Champion of Champions in the Interbreed.

The Dordrecht Veld Sheep Show, presented by the TAU SA Dordrecht Farmers’ Association, was held on the farm Avondzon of Frans Slabbert on 1 June. A total of 251 sheep were entered in the following sections: SA Mutton Merinos (34), Block Test (80) and Merinos (137).

Merino Classic Show 2008
Riversdale – The Merino Classic 2008 formed part of the 2008 Riversdale Show, with more than 300 sheep entered. As the SA Merino Championship show of the year, sheep were judged in 12 classes and four special classes. The competition in most classes was strong as the sheep were in prime condition. Judging began on 14 February and continued on 15 February.

The SA Mutton Merino National Championships were held in Bloemfontein from 12 to 14 March 2008. This year the show attracted breeders from all over the country, with 30 studs entering 485 sheep in various classes. The sheep on show were of a very high quality.

The Outeniqua Championships, representing this distinctive region’s finest cattle, were held at the George Show grounds on 29 February. One of the main events was the Jersey championship, featuring 75 Jerseys exhibited by 12 breeders, and judged by Samuel Walters and Chris Metlecamp.

At the Sussex Nationals held in Bloemfontein on 31 April, seven exhibitors showed 76 cattle. Geoff Orpin and Theo van Zyl were the judges. The Dexters held their Free State Championships on 1 May, where 117 cattle were shown by nine breeders and judged by Prof Piet Wilke.
